Understanding God’s Will

Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5:17

As we seek the will of God, understand it is very easy to know it. The best way to know the will of God is to study the Word of God. In 2 Timothy 2:15, it tells us: Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. If a person does not read the Bible, then they will have no wisdom or knowledge.

Remember this: the only Scriptures the Holy Spirit can bring to your remembrance, at any given time, are those things you have read, studied, and placed into your heart. If you have never read from the Old Testament, then nothing from there will ever be brought up to your mind. That is why it is important to read from Genesis to Revelation and feed upon God’s Word so you can grow in wisdom and knowledge––to true maturity in Christ.

The key thought Paul would have us to consider is walking circumspectly, not as fools but as wise (Ephesians 5:15). The word circumspectly is an enchanting word. Literally, it means “exactly or by rule that is according to a set of established norms.” In effect, Paul was exhorting us to walk carefully, or as the English word circumspectly suggests, look around at all the different situations, circumstances, and especially the opportunities God has given to you! Opportunities given to you today, you may never, ever have again. Whatever you did today, that day is gone; you will never see that day again. This is why Paul exhorts us––redeem the time! Buy back the time!

Parents gain experience and wisdom over their lifetime. They try to pass on their wisdom to their children by encouraging them to get an education and not to waste time. They know their children will not get back any wasted years. One day, they will reap the consequences of their negligence. Think about it; are you redeeming time in your life?

When your will is God’s will, you will have your will.
~C.H. Spurgeon~
