Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was a secret informer; and he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you.” - Nehemiah 6:10
Shemaiah, was a false prophet, and he became yet another tool used by the enemy. Satan had set another trap for Nehemiah through Tobiah’s and Sanballat’s plan to hire Shemaiah. Nehemiah would disregard Shemaiah false words; he continued to have great discernment.
Remember not every person who comes to you is from the Lord. These days, there is a lot of deceit among people, even in the church. When someone comes to you with a message from the Lord, ask yourself, “Is this a plot to hurt me, or to destroy me spiritually?” Then write down what was told you and wait on the Lord. If what was said does not come to pass, it was a false message––it was not from God.
Every Christian needs to have godly discernment; which is a gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:10). We can know whether somebody is being truthful or not, as we come into God’s presence, in prayer. The Lord will give us discernment through His Word, or give you a word of knowledge and let the situation be known to you (1 Corinthians 12:8).
Remember, Satan turns himself into an angel of light. Paul warned the Corinthian church of this truth, because they were listening to false apostles who were causing them to stray from the simplicity of the Gospel message. Paul told them in 2 Corinthians 11:13-14:
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
If Satan dared to use Scripture for the temptation of our Lord he will not scruple to use it for the delusion of men.
