9/11 Terror Attacks Remembered

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Today marks 16 years since the 9/11 attacks that shocked our nation and the entire world. Terrorists linked to the Islamic group al-Qaeda used calculated, callous and criminal plans to do the unthinkable––fly planes into buildings! America has promised to “Never forget.”

On September 11, 2001, four airliners headed for California were hijacked by 19 Islamic extremists. They carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Horrifically, two planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center, in New York City. The devastation took the lives of over 3,000 people; among them were more than 400 firefighters and police officers. Another plane also hit its target, the Pentagon, just outside Washington, D.C., while yet another plane, after a heroic struggle between the passengers and the terrorists onboard, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

When such turmoil and tribulation happens, where should we turn to for comfort? The God of all comfort––He is able to give us the mercy and strength we need in the difficult days ahead. Those who have experienced God’s comfort for themselves can share His comfort with others who have suffered the loss of loved ones or experienced distress.

Since 9/11, how many other countries have suffered the brutal attacks of terrorism? Recently, terrorists targeted Barcelona, London, Manchester and Paris. We live in a sinful, fallen world, filled with much evil. What comfort does the Gospel of Jesus Christ bring to us? Peace.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
~John 16:33~
