Failed Charge

So David took the spear and the jug of water by Saul’s head, and they got away; and no man saw or knew it or awoke. For they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen on them. Now David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of a hill afar off, a great distance being between them. And David called out to the people and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Do you not answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered and said, “Who are you, calling out to the king?” So David said to Abner, “Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not guarded your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king.”
1 Samuel 25:12-15

David had taken away the spear and the jug of water by King Saul’s head. Then he distanced himself far enough away so not to be in any danger from Saul. Next, David shouted out to Abner, he placed him on the spot for his failure to guard the king.

Abner was Saul’s body guard––his captain, and yet, David and Abishai were able to get through the enemy lines and come away with Saul’s spear, and his jug of water. Abner did not see or hear them. Failure to protect King Saul meant Abner was deserving of death. However, this situation was actually the Lord’s doing. He had placed a deep sleep on Saul and his men so they never awoke when David andAbishai came into the camp.

I believe that if we are not willing to listen to God’s counsel by His Word, He will allow us to fall into a deep sleep––we are not spiritually alert. It would be as if He has placed blinders over your eyes. During this time, you will learn some hard lessons. People, who are stubborn, cannot see straight. When shown the truth of God’s Word they refuse to listen. They are stubborn people––stubborn as mules.

A lowly person is a teachable person, easily entreated and open to explanation. Many of our spirits are too arrogant: they can teach others but can never themselves be taught. Many possess a stubborn spirit: they stick to their opinions even if they realize they are wrong.
