A Promise for Honor
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
We all have parents, but the reality is that they parented us in varying degrees of effectiveness. Whether our parents did a great job or a terrible job, the Bible gives us a responsibility toward them. This instruction is one of the Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai. It’s the first commandment that has a promise attached to it: honor our fathers and mothers so that life will be better for us. It’s worth noting that God did not say, “Honor your parents if they were good ones” or “Honor your parents if you are proud of them.” We’re simply given the commandment—not a suggestion, not a hint, not a nudge—to honor our parents. If your family life was less than ideal, that may require forgiveness on your part. God will be faithful to show you how to extend the same grace and mercy He has extended to you.
Heavenly Father, thank You for my parents and the way they have shown me what it means to follow You. For those who have challenging relationships with their parents, I pray blessing and an extra measure of grace so that they will be able to obey this commandment with a whole heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
