Hebrews 2:17 (NIV®)
For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
Jesus’ death for you and me on the cross is the expression of God’s provision for our lives―completely, for time and eternity. Through Jesus’ death, God provided for our physical and emotional needs, our sin problems, our guilt issues, our feelings of rejection. He provided wisdom in relationships and insight that enables us to participate in His plans if we so choose. God’s provision for us is wrapped up in one word: “atonement.” We can understand this “church word” by breaking it into syllables: at-one-ment. It simply means we are brought into a relationship in which we are reconciled, or “at one,” with God. To grasp the full magnitude of this, we have to think about the character of God. He is the Almighty Creator, the God who hung the stars in space and knows them by name, the God who is not bound by time or the physical laws that restrict us. The God of the universe has made it possible for you and me to be “at one” with Him. The extravagance of God’s provision for us is impossible to exaggerate or overestimate. And He offers it freely to you and to me.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the extravagant provision You made for me through the death of Your Son, Jesus. Give me a new awareness of the privilege of being “at one” with the God of the universe. Help me to lean on You and Your provision, for You truly are all I need. In Jesus’ name, amen.
