I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.
Paul is making an interesting statement. The first part of it, “I want to know Christ,” most of us would agree with. Then, “I want to know the power of his resurrection.” Most of us are advocates for the power of God, for healing and deliverance and the things that God’s power can accomplish on our behalf. Then comes the tough part: “I want to share in the fellowship of His sufferings.” And then he says something that seems really uncomfortable: “Becoming like him in his death.” At the point of Jesus’ suffering and death, He was completely yielded to Almighty God and His Father’s agenda. Jesus said, “God, I’d rather go any other way but this way, but if You need Me to go this way, let’s go.” And Paul said, “I want to do that.” Being yielded to Christ is not about pulpits or rooms filled with people. It’s about a God-purpose for your life, a Jesus-story to be told.
Heavenly Father, give me the faith and perseverance of Paul, that I might know You fully and desire Your will in my life above all else. Thank You for the people You place in my path so that I might share my Jesus-story with them. Give me courage to tell them about You. In His name I pray, amen.
