Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV®)
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Being salt and light is our God-given assignment. And if we fail in that, Jesus said we will be cast out. Why is that assignment non-negotiable for us? Salt slows down corruption. It can’t stop it completely, but it impedes its progress. And light dispels or at least diminishes the darkness. Without salt and light, corruption and darkness will cover the earth. The clear counsel of Scripture is that your life and mine should make a difference. Planet Earth is depending on the people of God. Jesus said so.
Our Heavenly Father, thank You that Your Word makes Your expectations clear to me. Thank You for giving me examples that I can understand, such as salt and light. Help me to be salt and light not only in my church but in my family, my community, and the world. I trust You for the strength to do that. In Jesus’ name, amen.
