Pack Your Bags

Exodus 13:3

“Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand.”

God required the Jewish people to celebrate a series of annual events that would foster their trust in His provision for them. Passover commemorates when the Spirit of God passed through Egypt and brought death to the firstborn in the land. The Hebrew children were spared when families followed God’s command to sacrifice a lamb and mark their doors with its blood. This event resulted in Pharaoh releasing them from slavery and was a prototype of the deliverance that Jesus would later bring on our behalf. But their deliverance was from more than just slavery; God delivered them from being powerless over their condition. They had lived in slavery for a long time. There were strong men and intelligent, capable women among them, but they were powerless to change their circumstances. And then Moses walked in and said, “Pack your bags.”  It’s a picture of what Jesus does in our lives. Apart from Jesus we can be physically strong, intelligent, and capable, but bound by something that we are powerless to shake off. Only He has the power to deliver us.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power of the Cross and the deliverance that is available to me today. I choose to “pack my bags” and follow You. Give me a hunger to read Your Word and the will to be obedient to it so that You can show me the way to a better life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
