Persistent Prayer

Luke 18:1

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells a story about an uncaring judge and the widow who kept coming to him with the plea, “Grant me justice.” He refused and refused until he finally gave in so she would leave him alone! The teaching is rightfully known as The Parable of the Persistent Widow. Luke thought the lesson―“Always pray and never give up”―was so important he gave it before the parable. I don’t think we’ve learned how to be persistent. We pray occasionally and give up quite easily. Or perhaps we think we don’t deserve an answer from God so we don’t bother to ask. Perseverance and persistence are necessary for being an effective follower of Jesus, so let’s pray—and not give up!

Heavenly Father, thank You that You always hear me when I pray, and that You are not bothered by the persistence of Your children. Teach me perseverance when I am weary and tempted to give up. I have seen Your faithfulness in my life, Lord, and I praise You for it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
