The Living Temple

1 Corinthians 3:16

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

One of the ground-shaking messages of the New Testament is that God no longer dwells in a building constructed by human hands; the Spirit of God literally dwells in each one of His people. Therefore, how we treat our bodies is an expression of worship. We can get the “amen corners” in almost any church fired up if we preach on drunkenness, but the Bible says far more about gluttony than it does drunkenness. You can dishonor God with a fork, because how we treat ourselves is a reflection of worship. I don’t think it’s appropriate to spray graffiti on the walls of the sanctuary, and I wouldn’t put it on a living temple either. Because our bodies are His dwelling place, we have a responsibility to God for how we treat them.

Heavenly Father, what a precious gift and responsibility it is that Your Spirit dwells within me. Help me to remember that I am worshipping You as I go about my day, making one choice after another that affects my body, Your temple. In Jesus’ name, amen.
