THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION

John 1:10-12

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

Jesus came into the world, but the world didn’t recognize Him. That seems nearly impossible. Imagine if you collected all the rabbis of the first century and said, “All of you who have walked on water, step forward. Now, everybody who has raised somebody who’s been dead at least three days, step forward. OK, everybody who has given sight to multiple blind people, step forward.” I’m thinking you’ve got a pretty small group. But they didn’t recognize Him. How can that be? They’re religious. They know the law. But Jesus didn’t meet their expectations. Their vision of the Messiah is a political, military deliverer who will drive out the Romans and restore autonomy and independence to Israel. Jesus shows up with a message about the Kingdom of God, and they don’t recognize Him. It’s sobers me, because when we fail to recognize Him, we reject Him. And when we reject God, there’s a consequence attached. The good news is that for all who do receive Him, there is a nearly indescribable payoff with eternal rewards: “the right to become children of God.” The decision each of us makes about Jesus truly is the most important decision we will ever make.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the right to become a child of God. Forgive me for the places I’ve rejected You. I want to be open to hearing Your voice and being obedient to it. Thank You that You called me to this great inheritance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
