A Disciplined Spirit
Ephesians 4:31 (NIV®)
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
We live in a world that seems to be overwhelmed with anger. We see on the news reports from every community and country that people are becoming enraged and even violent over insignificant things. Parents punish their children in unspeakable ways over normal childhood behavior. Road rage is responsible for serious accidents and even fatalities. Domestic violence exists behind the closed doors of many relationships. Teenagers are shot dead over athletic shoes. God has given us the ability to feel anger, but our lives should not be controlled or dominated by it, whether it’s ours or someone else’s. There is a context in which it’s appropriate and ways of expressing it that are helpful, and there also are contexts in which it is not appropriate and ways of expressing it that are destructive. We’ve been given the responsibility of making those decisions in a mature and godly way.
THINK ABOUT IT
Do you sometimes erupt with anger over things that other people seem to handle calmly? Ask the Lord for a disciplined spirit to help you channel your emotions in a way that is not damaging to others. He will give you a freedom from anger that you did not know was possible.
Heavenly Father, I am thankful that You have provided a way for me to live a disciplined life controlled by the Holy Spirit. Help me to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in my life. Let love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control grow daily. Forgive me when I fail to look to You for direction, and help me to turn quickly back with humility and a teachable spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
