Walk Simply

Matthew 22:37-39

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Years ago I read a book called Everything I Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum. The author said that wisdom isn’t found at the top of the graduate school mountain, but in the simple lessons of childhood: Don’t hit people. Wash your hands before you eat. Put things back where you got them. Cold milk and cookies do a body good. They are pretty fundamental things, but they make a lot of sense. We need to implement the spiritual equivalent of those simple notions in adulthood: Love God. Love your neighbors. Read your Bible. Pray. Let’s make sure we get the simple things right. Our neighbors will be blessed, and we’ll be happier and more productive citizens of God’s Kingdom.

Heavenly Father, I want to keep the simple things, the fundamental things, in the center of my walk with You. I put my trust in You and Your oversight of my life. Thank You for Your protection, Your provision, and Your plans for me. I choose Your way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
