Transformation Garden - Jan. 17, 2010

  • 2010 Jan 17

Healed - to restore soundness.  To set right.

What do I want my life to be like one year from now?

"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"
Jeremiah 29: 11, New International Version

It's one of my New Year's rituals.  You may still be involved in doing it right now - taking your 2009 calendar or daily planner and putting everything important into your new 2010 date book.  After copying all the necessary information from 2009 into the new 2010 book, my final act of closure on the old year is to go to my "Dorothy's junk" cupboard.  On the top shelf is a stack of calendars from the last fifteen years. (Like I said, this is an annual ritual).  I laid the 2009 book on top of the others and closed the door on a year that went by way too fast.

Perhaps, it was the speed with which 2009 flew by, but for a moment I stopped and took an inventory of what had happened over the last twelve months.  Have you do the same thing?  After a mental reminiscing about events - happy and sad - I came to the part where I reflected on my own life.  When 2009 began, what were my dreams for the year?  Had I attained my goals?  Was I satisfied with the last 365 days?

May I ask you, what would your answers to these same questions be?

As I reflect on the past 12 months, I have come to realize that often the happiness I longed for was influenced, to a great degree, by the external circumstances surrounding my life.  When events didn't bring me what I thought I wanted, I found myself disappointed, disillusioned and downright depressed.  And I know for a fact, I'm not alone.  You and I - all of us - live in a world filled with stress, turmoil, fear, and pain.  And these negative "attack arrows" often diminish the joy and peace we desperately search for each day.

And this brings me to the conclusion I came to as I reviewed the past year.  I'm just like my computer that at times annoys me so much.   If garbage goes into that electronic box on my desk - garbage come out.  While I don't know you personally, because you have visited Transformation Garden, I believe that like myself, you are tired of garbage in.  This year - 2010 - we're going to put a big "STOP" sign in front of the trash that comes our way.

We are women and men longing to be transformed.  And during the next 365 days, together we're going to walk a path that is different.  It's a road that has been well-marked for us by a Guide who has "plans" for our lives.  His plans are designed with each of us, individually.  His plans are laid out to fit our needs - and to reflect the person He longs for us to be.

Near the end of my book, When A Woman Meets Jesus, I relate a Native American tale about an elder who was talking to one of his disciples.  The elder said, "I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart.  One wolf is vengeful, angry and violent.  The other wolf is loving and compassionate."  The disciple asked, "Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?"  And the elder replied, "It depends on which one I feed."

If you want a diet for the next 365 days that includes hope, peace, compassion and love - than I invite you to feed daily from the best our heavenly Father has to give.

"Let me hear joy and gladness…
God, make a fresh start in me."
Psalm 51: 8, 9
