Today’s Text and Thought of Encouragement:

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; my God; in Him will I trust.”

Psalm 91: 1, 2

“Our needy souls sustain
With fresh supplies of love,
Till all Thy life we gain,
And all Thy fullness prove,
And, strengthened by Thy perfect grace,
Behold without a veil Thy face.”

John Wesley

Today’s Study Text:

“There is none holy like the Lord, there is none besides You; there is no Rock like our God.”

I Samuel 2: 2
Amplified Bible

What Our Prayers Reveal About Us

“The Rock on Which You Stand”

Part IV

“A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing.”

Martin Luther

What does it mean to me when I say, “God is my Rock?”

Is something going on in my life right now and I need my “Rock” to stand on and to be my Foundation?”

“Still, still with Thee,
when purple morning breaketh,
when the bird waketh,
and the shadows flee;
Fairer than morning,
lovelier than the daylight,
dawns the sweet consciousness,
I am with Thee!”

Mrs. H. B. Stowe

“Be to me a rock of refuge in which to dwell, and a sheltering stronghold to which I may continually resort, which you have appointed to save me, for You are my Rock and my Fortress.”

Psalm 71: 3
Amplified Bible

Nearly twenty years ago, before Jim and I moved to the little mountain town where we live, we came here for a weekend getaway. We decided to do some exploring so with the help of a very experienced guide and jeep driver, we were taken on a trip into the mountains that surround the city.

The particular tour we chose took us up into some spectacular Indian cliff dwellings where, at sunset, the five of us on the trip, enjoyed an evening meal under the shelter of a large rock shelf.

Just as we laid out our supper, a very large cloudburst descended upon us with an abundance of rain. We, however, were sheltered from the downpour because we were in a cave like setting, rock underneath us, surrounding us, and covering us. As the water cascaded down the rock walls all around us, we felt completely safe and sheltered in, “the cleft of the rock.”

I’ve always looked back on this event with a great deal of delight for it is the closest I’ve come to understanding the way the Psalmist, David, described the protection and refuge he felt in God – whom he called his Rock and Fortress.

David was, as we will find out in our upcoming studies about his life, an avid outdoorsman. From his early boyhood in the green pastures where he kept watch over his father’s sheep to his young manhood when he was on the run from King Saul and the mountainous ravines became his home, David’s love for and natural comfort with the outdoor world became the inspiration for the songs he wrote. It is in these Psalms where we find the constant reference to a God who is, for His children, like rock beneath their feet – a stable, solid, and reliable foundation that provides safety and surety. A covering and protection from storms. A haven during trouble. And the place of secure footing when all else fails.

How interesting that it was Hannah, a woman, who before David ever wrote the Psalms, prayed the words: “There is none holy like the Lord, there is none besides You; there is no Rock like our God” I Samuel 2: 2. For those of us who have encountered times in our lives when we feel as though we might slip and fall; and for those like Hannah who have fallen on their faces in despair and pain – what a blessing to know, for a fact, that God is our Rock. He is that solid place that is the foundation under us, the shelter surrounding us and the protective roof over our heads. As the prophet Isaiah said with great confidence, “So trust in the Lord forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock, the Rock of Ages” (Isaiah 26: 4, Amplified Bible).

“From the end of the earth will I cry to You

when my heart is overwhelmed and fainting;

Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I,

for You have been a shelter and a refuge for me,

a strong tower against the adversary.”

Psalm 61: 2,3
Amplified Bible

 He’s Always There

“When I feel I cannot go any farther,
He picks me up and tells me He knows.
When I feel I cannot sink any lower,
He pulls me out and tells me He sees.
When I feel that the pain can’t hurt any worse,
He takes it away and shows me He cares.
When I feel that I cannot open my heart,
He reaches in and shows me that He can.
When I think that my life can’t get any harder,
I turn to Him.
He’s always there.”
