“So she (Naomi) left the place where she was, her two daughters-in-law with her, and they started on the way back to Judah.”
Ruth 1: 7
“Discovering Your Heavenly Destiny”
“Destiny” The inevitable or necessary lot to which a particular person or thing is destined.
“Destiny waits in the hands of God, not in the hands of statesmen.”
T. S. Eliot
Have I ever wondered what my destiny is?
Has God shown me what I should do but I have chosen not to follow His leading?
“As the arrow, loosed from the bow by the hand of the practiced archer, does not rest till it has reached the mark, so men (and women) pass from God to God. He is the mark for which they have been created, and they do not rest till they find their rest in Him.”
“Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.”
William Jessings Bryan
Over the past few weeks, I have been slowly doing a little “spring cleaning.” It’s amazing how clutter piles up in our lives. Stacks of papers. Magazines that have been placed on a shelf for future reading. Before you know it, the entire house has that messy look. During my cleaning spree, I found a box that, believe it or not, contained notes from a college class I had taken on “Goal Planning.” To be honest, it was very revealing, seeing what I’d written as a young woman, thinking I had it all together! I had carefully outlined my life with detailed plans of where I’d be and when I’d get there. My timeline for life achievements was so specific, I even had the years listed as well as exactly what I’d be doing in five and ten year increments.
The thing is, some of the goals I did accomplish, sooner than I thought I would. But what struck me as I read through all the notes from my youth, was how little thought I gave, at that time, to the heavenly destiny my Father had for my life. As the years have passed, I’ve come to the conclusion that when we’re young and feel invincible, it’s very easy to think we can set our own course and be the captain of our own destiny. Feeling as we often do that life is ours for the taking, we rarely reflect on the possibility that life may throw us a few curve balls along the way. We don’t plan for the rough seas or the rocky coasts or the detours. We think all will be smooth sailing and then, when we least expect it, the unexpected rears its head and we feel as though our little boat will capsize.
I’m certain on the day that Elimelech and Naomi, along with their two boys left Bethlehem, they never could have imagined how their trek to Moab would end up. After ten years, only Naomi would be alive. Who could have planned this scenario? What’s more, her only family in Moab were now two daughters-in-law who were left after her sons died.
Let’s just say you were Naomi’s friend and you hadn’t seen her for a while. You came to visit and found her all alone. Could you imagine a worse “destiny” befalling someone you cared for? I couldn’t! Left a widow without any means of support in a foreign country! What a tragedy!
However, in the face of all the calamities that were heaped upon Naomi, as we look at the way God used the worst events to bring forth His heavenly destiny in her life, I’m reminded of the beautiful words penned by the writer William Cowper:
“God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.
Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.”
How could Naomi know that during the very time her life was being tossed about like a ship in a storm, God’s footsteps were right beside her and with the rise and fall of every wave, He was at her side.
The same is true for you and me. When we feel our life has no purpose and we question the destiny we were created for, it is at this very moment, our Father may be getting ready to unfurl before us a purpose so great we could never have envisioned the plan He has for our lives.
During the next few days, we will to learn from a poor widow, whose children also had died, how God can take the worst times in our lives and turn them into the best. We’ll see how our defeat may be at the heart of heaven’s destiny for us.
There is a French proverb which says: “One meets (her) destiny often in the road (she) takes to avoid it.” This is exactly what happened to Naomi. Who would ever have guessed that not only her destiny but the legacy of her life would be found inside the borders of Moab. But this was the destiny God had for His daughter who chose never to forget Him, no matter how rough the seas and disastrous the weather she was forced to confront. Choosing to follow heaven’s destiny, Naomi didn’t just have her wishes granted, instead, in the words of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, she was given, “something beyond” her wishes.
“Sow a thought, reap an act.
Sow an act, reap a habit.
Sow a habit, reap a character.
Sow a character, reap a destiny.”
Believe in Destiny
“Finding your way,
discovering your purpose,
the spark of delight
becomes a roaring fire
of passion for destiny.
Believe in destiny.
There is always a purpose.
Know that now;
when it happens.
Your time will come,
You will know your purpose,
It is true,
if you believe.
destiny is God’s will.
God has a purpose for you.
And when you discover it,
you grow closer to hugging Jesus in the end.”
