Don’t You Remember?
By Susan Aken

“They discussed this with one another and said, ‘It is because we have no bread.’ Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? … And don’t you remember ... Do you still not understand?’” Mark 8:16-21

Shortly after Jesus miraculously fed over four thousand people, the disciples were discussing not having any bread. Had they forgotten how He turned a few loaves and fish into food for thousands?

Remembering is important or we make the same mistakes over and over. If we don’t recall all God has done for us previously, we may doubt His provisions for today.

I need to remember:

He rescued me from sin and forgave me.

He called my heart to believe in Him.

He’s always been there.

He comforts me in grief and pain.

He remained faithful when I was faithless

He answered countless prayers.

The gift of my husband.

His grace shown in the miracle of our son’s adoption.

Treasured friends.

His living active Word, the Bible, that teaches and guides me.

The suffering that comes from rebellion.

The emptiness of selfishness.

The joy of giving and serving.

His kindness and mercy offered when I don’t deserve it.

His promises.

He says:

Don’t you understand?

I’ve never left you and never will.

I died for you, took your sin, and gave you My righteousness.

I’ll never turn you away and no one can take you out of My hands.

When you’re afraid,

When you’re crushed by your mistakes and failures,

When the suffering of the world feels overwhelming,

When you know you’ll never be good enough apart from me,

When you realize this world can never fill the emptiness of your soul,

Remember, I’m sufficient.
