Moral Attributes of "Lord of the Rings" December 27, 2001
I don’t go to movies much anymore because I don’t like the profanity and nudity. So mostly I watch the older movies. But “Lord of the Rings” is different. Based on the series by the Christian writer J.R.R. Tolkien (the man who lead C.S. Lewis to Christ), the first installment – at a theater near you – is about the eternal battle of good vs. evil. It helps to know the storyline and what’s behind before seeing the film, but this movie has many Christian metaphors. All but the first book in the series were written during the dark days of World War Two. But all deal with eternal things which cannot and should not be missed.
I urge you to see this film. The way to get more good films is to support the things that are good, as well as boycott the bad. We’ve spent too much time criticizing the bad and not enough supporting the good.
“Lord of the Rings” is also an excellent tool for starting a discussion with an unbelieving friend about good vs. evil and who is behind good and who is behind evil. I’m Cal Thomas in Washington.
