Daily Disciples Devotional - Sept. 15

September 15

Today's Reading: Proverbs 22; 2 Corinthians 8

Today's ThoughtsFaith that Waits

And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. Genesis 21:1-2

In today's verses, three phrases are bolded for emphasis. The verses describe how the Lord fulfilled His promise to Abraham and Sarah by giving them a son in their old age. Everything that the Lord had said to them did come to pass. These verses should give us all encouragement to know that what the Lord promises to us, He will fulfill even those promises that seem impossible. For Abraham to have a baby at 100 years old was simply a miracle…but God made that promise to Abraham about 25 years earlier. It was all going to happen in God's timing, and it did!

When we receive a promise or a word from the Lord about something to come in our lives, it is hard not to be anxious for its fulfillment. We want it and we want it now, not later. Waiting on the Lord is a test of our faith as well as for other purposes, sometimes known only to the Lord. We wonder why God takes so long. Doesn't He see our needs that we have today? Why do we have to wait? We must keep going and seeking the Lord's will, praying not to lose heart along the way.

Maybe you are waiting on a promise from God. Maybe you have been waiting for a very long time. Wherever you are today, be encouraged that God will keep His Word to you. Because we are human, we cannot understand the thoughts or the ways of God, but we can stay in His Word everyday and pray for His perfect timing in all things. The enemy would love to steal your faith, peace and hope. Fight back with a message such as today's reading. Our God is faithful and just in all His ways. We are the ones who lose faith and give up. The Lord never gives up on us, nor will any of His promises fail. The end result is not always what we expect but God's ways are always best for us. Hang in there…you never know what is just around the corner.
