Board Blindspots

Mystery has surrounded Karen Pletz's firing for months. The former CEO of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences had rapidly grown the organization and its visibility, when suddenly she was terminated.

According to a Kansas City Star article, her board seemed unaware of many important issues, like an ongoing IRS audit of the organization, a letter of intent with another medical facility to develop another campus, and skyrocketing expenses. That coupled with Ms. Pletz's salary growing from $261,000 to about $1.2 million, has caused some concern about the board's oversight.

Proverbs 27:23-24 teaches, "Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations?"

If you're responsible for overseeing an organization, remember to ask questions and dig deep.
