Tradition, Tradition, Tradition
by Berni Dymet

Mark 7:6b-7 This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.

Let me be honest with you, religious traditions leave me cold.  I'm sorry if that offends some people, but…Kneel now.  Stand now.  Sit now.  Do this.  Do that.  None of those things in themselves are bad.

But when we start thinking that those things somehow make God happy, or appease God or buy us a ticket to heaven --my hunch is we've missed the point.

Time and time again -you see Jesus clashing with the religious leaders of His day on this very thing.  Those leaders noticed that Jesus' disciples were eating food without going through the traditional religious cleansing rituals.

They quizzed Him on this (as you can imagine) - and you know what He said?  "You guys honor God with your lips, but your hearts are a million miles away.  You abandon the commandments of God and hold to human traditions".

In other words - you hypocrites.

There's nothing wrong with traditions - but let's not get the idea that somehow they're the way to God.

There is only one way - Jesus.
