Cells Like Teen Spirit

We might as well call Generation Z “Generation i.” A new survey shows that 34 percent of U.S. teens have iPhones — while another 40 percent plan to buy one within the next six months. “The numbers are mind-boggling,” said technology research analyst Eugene Munster of the firm Piper Jaffray & Co., which conducted the survey. “About 7 percent of the U.S. population is within that 14-18 demographic. It would be about $3 billion in sales.”

His figures found teen iPhone use has doubled in the past year, from 17 to 34 percent, and Munster expects Apple will hold 40 to 45 percent of the teen smartphone market by the fall.

Piper Jaffray’s “Taking Stock with Teens” report credits the growth to new $48 plans for the iPhone 3GS and the unveiling of the iPhone 4S.

“This is exactly what happened with the iPod. It’s like déjà vu,” Munster said. “The only question is, what’s next.” The survey says tablets will be next, with 34 percent of teens already having one, and 19 percent planning to get one within the next six months.
