Ziklag: Digging a Deeper Hole | 2 Samuel 11:13 | Devotional

2 Samuel 11:13 At David's invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master's servants; he did not go home.

A United States Congressman recently tweeted an inappropriate photograph of himself to a woman. When the news came out, he went on national news shows proclaiming that his Twitter page had been “hacked” and denied the he had ever done such a thing. Then, days later, after he had dug a hole that might end his career, he came clean. He sent the tweet…and several others. While the actions of the congressman are despicable, they serve as a solemn warning to each of us. We are only one step away from a foolish decision…and then the lies that follow.

In today’s passage, David, the man after God’s own heart, committed adultery. The one night stand resulted in Bathsheba’s pregnancy. Certainly that sin in and of itself was grievous enough. But David’s plan to cover up his sin involved more sin. He continued digging the sinful hole by devising a plan to ensure Bathsheba’s husband’s death on the battlefield. His lust led to stealing, led to adultery, led to lying, led to drunkenness, led to murder.

Sin does not ride alone. Like an Old West gang of outlaws riding into town, sin after sin kicks up the dust until we are covered in dirt. There is a way out though. If we cry out to God, even in our filthy state, he “is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Father, give us the strength to reach out from the pile of sin, even the pile of our own making. Thank you for your promise of full and complete forgiveness. Thank you for helping us back home. In Jesus name. Amen.
