How to make your house a home

September 18, 2012

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”

Deuteronomy 6:4-7

If you’ve ever purchased a house, or simply been shopping for one, you’re probably familiar with a little real estate lingo. One thing you might’ve noticed from agents is that they never try to sell you a house. They don’t show you houses and you don’t make an offer on a house. No, they sell you homes.

So what’s the difference? Why is it much more effective to speak of homes than it is to talk about houses? It’s because while a house can be built anywhere at any time, a home is a place of warmth. It’s where your loved ones are. It’s a haven of safety. A house is bricks and sticks, built by man. But a home is built by God.

My concern for many people today is that they see where they live as a house, not a home. They think of their dwelling as a place they can eat, sleep, and be entertained. But they never invest in making their house a home by allowing God to build and strengthen it.

Whatever your living situation is today, you can make your house a home. Invite God in to help build and strengthen the relationships in your house. Make Him King over every inch of your dwelling. When you do, you’ll see your house transformed into a God-honoring home.

MAKE YOUR HOUSE A HOME BY INVITING GOD TO BUILD AND STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THOSE WITHIN IT.
