The Greatest Text Message | Ephesians 6:4 | Devotional

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

As parents, we put a lot of expectations on our children. We want them to be not just good students, but honor students. We want the bumper sticker saying—Proud Parent of An Honor Student at Podunk High School—attached to the back of our SUV. We want our kid to be not just a good, but a great athlete. The sports vary, but “All-Star,” “Traveling,” “Cup,” and “Championship” are the names we want associated with our little darlings. When it comes to music, we like “solo” by our child’s name in the program. When it comes to dance and drama, we like “featuring” somewhere by little Johnny’s picture. Prestige comes with grades, performance, SAT scores, and college acceptance. But…we may just be missing the boat.

While I believe in the hard work, discipline, and self-esteem that comes from achievement, there is something else that has to be at the front of the line. Success in any venture is empty unless it flows from knowing who you are in Christ and that you are living life His way. That doesn’t come from learning how to hit a curve or high note. That comes from the training and instruction of the Lord lived out in life experience. That’s where we cannot miss the boat.

So parents of young children, hear my plea. Make it your commitment to bring up your children in the training and instruction of the Lord. Spend time with them in His word. Model Christian living in your life. Major on the majors. Then teach them how hard work and discipline pays off. Then get your kids involved in the extra-curricular things that they (not necessarily you) choose and enjoy.

And by the way—if you find the person who started the bumper sticker thing—give me their name.
