I’d like to invite you to listen to our radio broadcast today that features a conversation with former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee about the election. The program can be accessed here.
In the midst of our visit, I asked Governor Huckabee to address the argument that many 20- and 30-something Christians make when supporting a candidate that supports abortion and same-sex marriage. They often tell me that yes, those issues (life and marriage) are important, but there’s so many other things we should be thinking about like the environment, poverty and social justice.
How do we engage this point of view?
I would as firmly as possible, but also as gently and graciously as possible, help them to understand that's an illogical point of view to say that they can only concentrate on one way of doing the right thing. That if they truly are into conservation and they believe that the environment is important, why do they believe it's important? Because they believe that if you have an environment that threatens human life, then that somehow violates the sanctity of the human life and the value of a human life.
If they believe that anything threatening our life cycles or threatening our species is something to be concerned about, would they not be concerned about that which is a direct and immediate and ultimate and final threat to an individual, which abortion represents?
I think we have to go back and ask them the questions as we give them the answers and make them think through their own point of view and follow it to its logical conclusion. I've always believed that the really hard-core left cannot live with the logical conclusion of their own views. And it's our job, not so much to argue with them, but to simply gently lead them through their own views and see where it ends up and ask them then the ultimate question:
"Can you live with where this takes you?"
And I think most of them in all candor, if they are willing to go there, they most certainly cannot live with the consequences of their own views.
