How many ‘do-overs’ does God give you?

January 10, 2014

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Romans 6:1-2

Several years ago, I decided I’d try to take up the game of golf. Early on, one of the things I loved most about golf were the mulligans – those “re-dos” you get if you make a bad shot off the tee. With a mulligan, it’s like the last shot never happened and you get to try again.

In the golf I play, you’re really only supposed to take one mulligan for every nine holes. But in the Christian life, praise God that your mulligans are endless. When you make a bad shot (give in to sin), that sin will never be counted against you and you get a do-over.

Now, many people might say, “Wait! If God gives us do-overs all the time, what’s the point of obeying?” Well, you obey for the same reason you don’t use do-overs in golf to just play sloppy. You want to play your best golf because you care about the game. And with God, you want to obey because you love Jesus.

In Christ, grace allows you to mess up. But let’s never abuse grace by using it as an excuse to sin. Thank God for the do-overs He gives you by obeying His will for your life!

GOD GIVES YOU ENDLESS ‘DO-OVERS’ WHEN IT COMES TO SIN… SO LIVE A LIFE OF OBEDIENCE OUT OF A DEEP LOVE FOR JESUS CHRIST.
