Obedience Comes First

Dr. Ray Pritchard

"He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do” (John 6:6).

Jesus knew he was going to work a miracle.
The disciples didn’t.

Nowhere does he say, "You guys do your part, then I’ll do mine, and we’ll have plenty of food to feed this crowd.”

A big part of this story is about obedience. Will the disciples obey the Lord even though they clearly don’t have what it takes? Will they attempt the impossible ("Give them something to eat”) even when they don’t have the resources?

Obedience always comes first.
Will we take daring steps of faith?
Are we willing to fail along the way if that’s what it takes?

Don’t read this story and think, "The disciples knew in advance that Jesus would work a miracle.” They didn’t! Jesus never promised a miracle.

That came later.
Obedience always comes first.

Jesus doesn’t tell us in advance what he will do.
Will we obey him anyway?
