Hands-On Faith - Week of May 12, 2014

Hands-on Faith for Families– week of May 19, 2014

Theme: Faith and Science

Changing Matter

Play: Partially fill a clear glass jar with very hot or boiling water. Place a bowl or plate over the top of the jar. After a few seconds, fill the bowl or plate with ice. Watch for several minutes to see what happens inside the jar.

Talk: Trees, rivers and the air we breathe are all made out of matter. Matter is the stuff all around us. It appears in three forms: solid, liquid and gas. Some of these forms can change into other forms. In our experiment, we saw water in all three states. Steam (gas) formed from the hot water (liquid). Then the ice (solid) above it cooled the steam and caused it to rain (liquid) inside the jar. In nature, water turns to gas that forms clouds, and then the clouds water the earth. The Bible tells us that God puts the clouds in the sky and sends the rain, snow and frost (Psalm 147:8,16). Without this process, plants would not get the water they need to live. It demonstrates not only God’s loving provision, but also His purposeful design. How does God lovingly provide for you? Where do you see His purposeful design around you?

Pray: Thank God for sending rain and caring for His creation.
