Day 9-When Marriage is Hard

Lyn Cooke

Sometimes marriage is hard. I mean, the odds of two people with years of baggage coming together to live in close proximity day in and day out and not having trouble, is slim to none.

I've admitted here before that my husband and I have had several close calls. And by close, I'm referring to divorce court. There have been days that I didn't think I had anymore to give. There have been nights that I have cried out to God in anguish. There have been moments when I wanted to give up. But, God.

He has been so faithful.  Even in the toughest times, He's given me enough for the next step.  And next month it will be 26 years that we've been married.

Our marriage isn't perfect, because we're not perfect. But we love each other deeply and are committed to one another. And that is an answer to prayer!

Father, I come to You asking for resurrection power. The surpassing greatness of Your power toward us who believe. The working of the strength of Your might which You brought about in Christ when You raised Him from the dead and seated Him at Your right hand. (Ephesians 1:19-20) I need You to do this for my marriage. It seems like the love has dried up and we have nowhere to turn. But You are my hope, O Lord God. (Psalm 71:5) Do not forsake me when my strength fails. (Psalm 71:9)

Father, rescue us quickly. Be to my husband and I a rock of strength, a stronghold to save us. For You are our rock and our fortress. For Your name's sake, lead and guide us. Pull our feet out of the net of this difficulty, for You are our strength. (Psalm 31:2-4)

Lord, help us communicate. Let no unwholesome word proceed from our mouths, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to the hearer. (Ephesians 4:29) Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from us, along with all malice. And Lord, may we be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving each other just as Christ also has forgiven us. (Ephesians 4:31-32)

Father, it's hard to forgive when unkind words have been said. Harboring and holding on to bitterness seems easier. I know that's not Your way. Change us. Change me. Help us both to be compassionate to each other, kindhearted, humble in spirit, not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for we were called for this very purpose that we might inherit a blessing. (1 Peter 3:8-9) Father, I pray that no bitter root springs up in our marriage for by it many are defiled. (Hebrews 12:15)

Father, help us to set our minds on things above not on the things of this earth. (Colossians 3:2) Help us to put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with each other and forgiving each other. Help us to put on love which is the perfect bond of unity. And let Your peace, Lord, rule in our hearts, to which we were called in one body, and make us thankful.(Colossians 3:12-15)

O God, breathe new life on our marriage and revive us again. In Jesus' name, Amen.
