See the Signs

On the third day, behold, it happened that a man came from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. So it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the ground and prostrated himself. - 2 Samuel 1:2

Three days after David returned to Ziklag, a man came from Saul’s camp to David, in the land of the Philistines. Notice, the man had dust on his head and his clothes were torn. When David saw the man in this condition, coming from Saul’s camp, he knew something was wrong.

It may seem the man was dirty and his clothes were torn because he had been in battle and then traveled to get to David, but those were not the reasons he was in that condition. Remember, when someone was mourning, they would tear their clothes and put dust on their heads. The man before David was in mourning.

Not only was the man in mourning, but he came before David and prostrated himself before him. He acted with great respect before David, as if he was a king. David was a warrior, he commanded an army, but he was also a man without a country. He was living in the land of the Philistines but he was a Jew in exile, hiding to save his life.

All these things show us David’s life was about to change, and David knew there was trouble in Israel, because of the appearance of this man. Many times, God is preparing us for a major change in our lives, but we are too busy to see the signs—too busy with our own plans. Keep your eyes and ears open to the Lord, so He can show you His will for your life.

I can say from experience that 95% of knowing the will of God consists in being prepared to do it before you know what it is.
