Communion with God
Give ear, O my people, to my law; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. - Psalm 78:1-3
The final day of the Feast of Booths begins today at sundown and it is called Simchat Torah, which is translated in English to “Rejoice in the Torah, God’s Word.” It is a day to celebrate God giving the children of Israel His Word and them receiving it. It celebrates the first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which means “Law.” God gave them the Law, so they could be reconciled to Him, so He could dwell among them.
Notice what the psalmist said, Give ear, O my people, to my law; hear what the Lord has to say to you as He opens His mouth and shares His Word with you. These words have been told to them by their fathers and these words they should pass on to their children, as God speaks to them through parables and sayings of old.
These parables and sayings were not spoken by God to entertain the people. They were to educate and edify God’s people. Through His Word, they were able to have a relationship with the Lord. Imagine, after Adam and Eve, relationship with God had been broken, but through His Word, He made it possible for the people to be in communion with Him.
It is the same for us today. We are to read and know God’s Word, then pass it on to our children. Only through His Word will we know Him and have a personal relationship with Him.
If we are weak in communion with God,
we are weak everywhere.
