Children: Spiritual Blessings

And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron. Also more sons and daughters were born to David. Now these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet. - 2 Samuel 5:13-16

While the Lord was blessing David and using him to bless His people, the nation of Israel, God did not approve of everything David did. Taking more wives and concubines was not of the Lord. It was not something God told David to do. As a matter of fact, God told him not to do it in His Word: Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away (Deuteronomy 17:17).

Even though God did not approve of David taking many wives and concubines, it is important to notice two of David’s sons, because they are found in the lineages of Christ. Nathan, is the one from the line of Mary, Jesus’ mother, found in Luke 3:23-38. Then, in Matthew 1:1-16 we have the line of Joseph, which includes David’s son, Solomon. Both of these men are among the many sons of David, and they are of the line of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

It was never God’s plan for David or any of us to have multiple wives or multiple husbands, but God never punished the children. Solomon and Nathan were born of David by different mothers and they are accounted in the lines of Jesus. Think of the huge blessing. That is what God wants to do with our children. He wants to bless them and use their lives. No matter the circumstances of their birth, they are a blessing of the Lord.

A parent must respect the spiritual person of his child, and approach it with reverence.
