The Goodness of God

“And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.” - 2 Samuel 7:28-29

Look at how many times David used the word servant in his response to God’s promise to him and his house. He used the word ten times in this prayer. David was truly humbling himself before the Lord. He recognized his position before the Lord. God was blessing him, and he was nothing more than a servant to the Lord.

While David knew he was a servant to the Lord, he also acknowledged the reason God was blessing him and his house. It was out of God’s goodness He was blessing His servant.

I really believe the reason God wanted to bless David was not only because He is so good, but because David recognized he was not so good. David knew who he was before the Lord. If God is the standard of goodness, we all fall short of the goodness of God. Not only do we fall short, but God knows it. He knows we cannot earn His blessings, so out of His goodness, He blesses us.

It blows me away to think of the heart of God and how much he loves me—how much He loves you. The love of God is something we can never earn. It is a free gift from Him, because of His goodness. Think about it and give thanks to God for His goodness.

God’s giving deserves our thanksgiving.
