With lottery fever sweeping the nation, Christian leader John Piper has encouraged Christians to look to God for satisfaction.
According to The Christian Institute, Piper noted on his Desiring God website that seeking after riches will lead to “temptation and a trap.”
“Managers don’t gamble with their Master’s money. All you have belongs to God. All of it,” Piper noted, alluding to the Christian’s position as stewards of what God has given.
In addition, Piper pointed out that the chances of winning the lottery are very small. In the U.S., the odds are around one in 292 million.
Instead of putting trust in wealth and getting rich quickly, Piper encouraged Christians to “Pray that Christ’s people will be so satisfied in him that they will be freed from the greed that makes us crave to get rich.”
Various news sources have also reported on the destructive nature of being so invested in the lottery, which one newspaper commentator called one of “society’s modern cancers.”
Piper also quotes from the International Business Times in his article which states that the lottery is “just another form of gambling” in which the players “will all eventually lose.”
