David’s Mighty Men

Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array at the entrance of the gate. And the Syrians of Zoba, Beth Rehob, Ish-Tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field. - 2 Samuel 10:7-8

The people of Ammon thought they could come against Israel, but who did Israel have on their side? God!  David had already defeated so many of his enemies and now he was prepared for war once again. David, in battle, had always trusted in the Lord, even from hisyouth, he told Goliath: “… the Lorddoes not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s ...” (1 Samuel 17:47).

He gave orders to Joab, to get Israel’s mighty men in place for battle.

There is a long list of David’s mighty men mentioned in 2 Samuel 23:8-39. Three of these mighty men placed their lives in jeopardy when they went behind enemy lines just to get David a drink of water! God had faithfully brought men into David’s life who were willing, if necessary, to lay down their lives for their king.

As God’s children, we too have Him on our side to help fight our battles. Isaiah 54:17 tells us: no weapon formed against you shall prosper. In times when the enemy comes against you, prayerfully ask God to bring alongside mighty men or women who will loyally fight alongside you in prayer or in battle, even if it means giving their lives.

Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not whether they be clergymen or laymen; they alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven upon earth.
