Franklin Graham: 'I'm Surprised and Disappointed' Wheaton Faculty Supports Hijab-Wearing Professor

Amanda Casanova

Franklin Graham said he is “disappointed” that the Wheaton College faculty had recommended dropping the case against the professor who said Muslims and Christians worship the same God.

“Both my father Billy Graham and my mother attended Wheaton College in Illinois – in fact that’s where they met,” Graham wrote in a Facebook post. “I’m surprised and disappointed that the faculty council there is now recommending the college drop their plans to terminate a professor who published that she believed Islam and Christianity worship the same God in December.”

Dr. Larycia Hawkins was suspended after posting a message on Facebook that she believes Muslims and Christians worship the same God. She also said she would wear a hijab in support of Muslim women.

She was placed on administrative leave for the post.

Wheaton College's Faculty Council recently voted to urge the college to drop any efforts to try to fire Hawkins.

Graham, however, also added that Hawkins’ comments are not minor.

“Islam denies that God has a Son. They deny that Jesus is God. They do not believe in a Triune God–the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” Graham continued. “I can tell you – Islam and Christianity clearly do not worship the same God.”

"How the faculty council can now support this professor being allowed to teach students is deeply concerning.”

Hawkins will now go before the faculty personnel committee.
