When the Enemy Returns

When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered together. Then Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River, and they came to Helam. And Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. - 2 Samuel 10:15-16

Even though the Syrians were defeated it did not take long before David’s enemies regrouped. This time they received help from Hadadezer, who sent for more Syrians beyond the river. These were professional fighters called mercenaries. Everything was building up into another bloody battle. However, we can learn from the Syrian army. In their defeat, they gathered together and prepared for another attack.

It is important to realize that Satan does the same thing over and over. He attacks us when we are weak. Remember Jesus’ encounter with Satan? He tempted Jesus after He had for fasted forty days and forty nights. Prepared, Jesus defeated Satan using the Word of God.  However, notice this very important point:  Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time(Luke 4:13).

The truth is Satan, when defeated, will leave us alone for a time but will always plan for another attack, when he sees a good opportunity. We have to remember that we are in a constant spiritual battle against Satan and his demons. We must not be caught unaware but ready to use the Word of God to fight against Satan, at all times.

Surely what a man does when he is taken off his guard is the best evidence for what sort of man he is.
