God, Can You Really Work This Out for Good? | 1 Corinthians 2:14
1 Corinthians 2:14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Every morning our staff gathers to pray and this morning our focus was on people in our congregation going through difficult situations. As we prayed through the list, I was reminded that life can deal some serious blows…even some knock down punches. From our human perspective the situations and the timing stink and our hearts go out and prayers go up for the many in the midst of life challenges.
For followers of Jesus these challenges are still difficult. We are not immune to disappointment, discouragement, or fear. Unanswered question still rattle around in our mind. But there is something more. The Spirit of God, who lives within us, speaks to our heart. He reminds us that our battle is a spiritual one. He reminds us that God has not forsaken us. He brings a deep peace. The Spirit reminds us, even in the chaos of the storm that the same God who loves us so much that He sent His Son to die for our sins, is in control. He delivers spiritual discernment.
Songwriter and singer Scott Krippanyne recorded a powerful song that speaks to that the truth of our passage today. The refrain goes like this:
Sometimes He calms the storm With a whispered peace be still He can settle any sea But it doesn’t mean He will Sometimes He holds us close And lets the wind and wave go wild Sometimes He calms the storm And other times He calms His child.
Father, if you chose not to calm our storms please calm out hearts.
