If you’ve never heard of the movie Clue, based on the Hasbro board game of the same name, no one would blame you. Released in 1985, the movie was a critical and commercial failure, with viewers expecting it to be forgotten by the next theatrical cycle. However, Clue surprisingly endured, becoming one of those rare films to amass a devoted following long after its intended run. Even today, Clue is beloved by audiences for its campy, off-the-walls humor, memorable performances (by Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, and Christopher Lyod no less), not to mention the movie’s multiple endings. So it’s a bit surprising to hear the film is getting remade.
According to Variety, Fox has taken over the murder-mystery remake with the intent to update the story. The original Clue was set in 1954 New England, and followed the games iconic characters (Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, and Miss Scarlet) as they tried to solve the murder of the enigmatic Mr. Body. While there’s no word yet on how Fox intends to change the movie, Clue’s revival follows a series of recent game-inspired movies including Battleship and Ouija.
