Proverbs 6:16-19

“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plan, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”

Beware the “small” sins in your life!

Anyone who loves the Lord should sit up straight and pay attention when you read this passage. Things the Lord hates, which are an abomination to him! This is very strong language regarding our Lord’s reaction to these seven things. As you read these seven things you notice a couple in particular that warrant such a strong reaction: hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans.

But the others seem like small sins. Why would they cause such a strong reaction from God? Pride, telling lies, strife in relationships—these don’t seem so bad.

But God wants us to remember that just because a sin is common doesn’t mean that it is insignificant. Each of these sins is at the root of all sin. Pride, lies, conflict were all involved in the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

If you allow small sins to find a place in your life where you are comfortable in them, they will fester there and begin to destroy your walk with God.
