Our Great God

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. - Nehemiah 8:5

The people stood up in reverence to hear God’s Word. Can you imagine standing for six hours to hear the Word of God? Interestingly, by the time of Christ, the rabbi’s actually sat down while the people remained standing. In our churches today, we have the people sit, and the teacher is the one who usually stands to teach God’s Word.

Then, notice how Ezra blessed the Lord––the great God. He magnified Him to the people as a great God. The Bible declares: For the LORD is the great God, and the great King above all gods (Psalm 95:3). In many countries over the entire world, there are still many earthly deities that are worshiped. But, our God is above them all. He is the only true God: “I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God besides Me…” (Isaiah 45:5). His incredible character is described in Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.

Christians serve a great God! What great things has He done for each one of us? By God’s mercy and grace; He has saved us. We were once dead in our trespasses and sins but God has made us spiritually alive with Christ.  Heaven is our eternal destination. It is an inheritance that cannot fade away. Our salvation is a gift of God. We only need to exercise faith to believe in Christ’s finished work on the cross (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:1-10).

If you do not know our great God, prayerfully and reverently read the Scriptures. The Lord wants you to know Him (John 17:3). Then you too can serve the King of gods and worship Him for His greatness.

Inasmuch as there is none like You, O LORD You are great, and Your name is great in might.
~Jeremiah 10:6~
