Interestingly, as the Levities quieted the people, we see there was complete order in the entire service. It remained in control because the Levites were leading. Their words caused the people to be still and there was a time of silence.
When God’s people are in distress, it benefits them to be still before God so He can speak to their hearts. When I want to be alone with God, I get on my Harley and go up to the mountains. I want to be away from people; otherwise I am always talking with them. I try to take every opportunity to be still before God. Then He can speak to me and quiet my soul.
David is a perfect example of how to be still before God. In times of distress He described how he quieted himself: Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me (Psalm 131:2). Then David wrote in Psalm 23:1-3:
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul…
Knowing who God is makes a great difference in how we handle difficult situations. The widow of Nain wailed in grief. She was bereaved of her only son. The Lord saw her sorrow and had compassion on her. He told her: “Do not weep.” Those who carried the coffin “stood still.” Then Jesus brought her son back to life. God was glorified (Luke 7:11-16).
Remember everything happens for a purpose. Often our trials are allowed so that God’s glory can shine out in our darkest moments.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
