Within Nehemiah 10, there are lists of names to be read which can become very laborious and monotonous. However, I believe the Holy Spirit wanted to put each person’s name in the Scriptures to remind us how God knows each one of us by name. We are not just a number to God; we are important to Him and He thinks about us all the time.

Think about this incredible passage of Scripture for a moment, Psalm 139:17-18:

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; when I awake, I am still with You.

Consider this!  Before Jesus met a person, He already foreknew them. In John 1:17, Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”  Jesus already knew the Samaritan woman. When He had asked her about her husband, she answered: “I have no husband.”  Jesus responded by revealing her sinful life: “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly” (John 4:17-18).

Jesus also saw a chief tax collector who had gone up into a tree to see Him. Jesus knew Him by name and said: “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house” (Luke 19:5).

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.”
