The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear a case filed by the American Humanist Association which challenged student-led prayer before school board meetings.
According to OneNewsNow.com, back in March, the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Birdville Independent School District in Haltom City, Texas allowing student-led prayer to continue.
The American Humanist Organization appealed the court’s decision, but their case has now been declined by the Supreme Court.
Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver commented on the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the case:
"It was unanimous because the Supreme Court of the United States has spoken on this issue not very long ago," said Staver. "Not with regards to school boards but with regards to the local governmental level – and the precedent is exactly the same. I think after this, you're going to see more and more school boards allow this kind of prayer and certainly not be intimidated."
A 2014 case, Town of Greece v. Galloway set a precedent of allowing prayer before local government meetings when a high court in the state of New York ruled in favor of allowing the prayers.
The town of Birdville has been allowing prayer before school board meetings since 1997.
