What Is Truth?

Many of the most important lessons I have learned in the past 50 years were taught to me by laypersons. That does not mean I am ungrateful for my seminary training. At seminary, I was given invaluable insights about Scripture, church history and Christian ethics; but I confess that when I came out of seminary almost 50 years ago, I had been infected with some of the liberalism that was dominant in the seminaries in the 1960s and still persists in some seminaries. As a rookie minister, I preached the Bible, but with a few reservations. I suspected the Bible needed to be updated by modern scholarship.

I was similar to the old man who went for his first ride in an airplane. He was in his mid-80s and very anxious about flying, but his relatives strongly urged him to fly. After landing and getting out of the plane, a relative asked him, “Grandpa, how did you like that ride?” He replied, “Oh, it was OK, but I never really put my full weight on the thing.” I was a bit that way with the Scripture.
