Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desire, to be made new in the attitude of your minds.
I’ve been a Christ-follower for a while, but I still have to be careful about what I fill my mind with—the music I listen to, the things I read, the television and movies I watch. We have this ongoing cultural debate about what is profane or obscene and what the government will allow to be broadcast during certain times of the day. May I be honest with you? If you’re looking to the government to set the standards for what you will listen to and what you’ll watch, you’re in trouble. I’m very grateful for our freedom of speech, but that same liberty should be a warning that the government does not set the standards for righteousness and holiness and purity—God does. As Christ-followers, our boundaries should be different than those who are not Christ-followers. Don’t follow your feelings, because your feelings can be wrong. Don’t make yourself vulnerable to things that will force you to spend enormous effort weeding your heart and mind. Make a habit of filtering what goes into your mind. Choose things that you know will please the Lord.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the discernment the Holy Spirit gives to me. Help me to guard my mind with vigilance, seeking to honor You with all that enters it. Continue to purify my thoughts and put off my old self. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, Lord. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
