Pastor Daron Lindemann
Wood is created by God, and then sometimes people carve idols out of it. Animals and planets are created by God and in some cultures represent mythological gods. The imaginative power of the human mind is created by God, and with it we engineer our own saviors.
As he watches us flirt with false gods, something in our Maker and Redeemer clicks, making him wish we were giving him our attention instead. After God found his special people Israel dancing around a golden calf, he said, “They made me jealous by what is no god” (Deuteronomy 32:21).
What worthless idol can put a smile on your face by spinning a meteorite across the sky or painting a sunset in your corner of the world? What imitation savior knows your fears before they develop in you emotionally? These are acts of courtship by a loving God competing with selfish idols. “He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy” (Acts 14:17).
Surely there is “no god” who can compare to the creating and providing of God Almighty. Once this captures a person’s attention, well, the redeeming of the Son and sanctifying of the Spirit’s breath set apart the true God as the one and only Savior.
Fear, love, and trust in God above all things. Nothing else compares.
