Divine Direction
Then the cows headed straight for the road to Beth Shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right hand or the left. And the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh.
1 Samuel 6:12
The Philistines placed the Ark of God on a cart and hitched two milk cows that headed down the road to Beth Shemesh, meaning, “the House of the Sun.” The place was a priestly city. Since the priestly line had become corrupted, resulting in the death of Eli and his sons, the priests were found to be unfit to lead and teach the people––sad.
The cows were lowing as they went. They were separated from their calves and were displeased. The animals did not want to go, but they finally adjusted. God was directing them. They knew their Creator. God’s sovereign hand was guiding the cows to take the Ark to its new destination. The Ark was no longer in the hands of Israel’s enemies.
In the same way, God’s sovereign hand worked in the life of Elijah. He told him to go hide by the brook Cherith, and during the drought, He would send ravens to feed him bread and meat:
“Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there” (1 Kings 17:3-4).
On another occasion, Elijah fled from the wicked Queen Jezebel who sought to kill him; God, once again, fed him as he slept under a tree:
…suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water (1 Kings 19:5-6).
When you go through a trial, the sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which you lay your head.
